Rosé de Macération, Benoit Lahaye, NV
Benoît and Valérie Lahaye make quite exceptional champagnes from superb terroirs in Bouzy and Ambonnay that they work together with their two sons, and an incredibly muscular horse called Tamise used for ploughing to avoid compaction of the soils.
Biodynamic since the early 2000’s, their wines always have a density & purity of fruit & with very low dosage, never hide behind winemaking ego or flourish. This rosé is also the only wine they do not age in oak, opting instead for the gentler feel of amphora to let the grapes truly shine through a more transparent lens.
Made from 35 year old Pinot Noir vines, whole bunches are macerated for 2.5 days before being pressed. The wine is then aged 50% in amphora and 50% in large wooden barrels, going through malolactic fermentation. Both of these processes give the resultant wine a true opulence and generosity of character. Benoit’s Rosé has intensely fragrant strawberries and raspberries with a hint of rose petal on the nose, a seriously vinous and terroir-driven Pinot noir with an incredibly sustained finish – the perfect champagne for spreading across a wide selection of dishes on the table.
