Contrada Crasa Rosso “CR”, Vino di Anna, 2018

The first wine that Eric and Anna made together was simply called “Rosso” and this majestic label (left) was created.  Grapes were hand harvested for several years from this very old vineyard (110 – 120 yrs old) of Nerello Mascalese in the Contrada of Montelaguardia until 2014, when the vineyard sadly stopped producing.

In 2017, a small quantity of wine was made for the first time from a beautiful, amphitheatre of terraces that were planted between the winery and house in 2013, in the Contrada Crasa.  These terraces were cleared of blackberries and broom and closely planted to a massal selection of Nerello Mascaslese on their own roots.  The resultant wine was vibrant, crunchy, fresh acidity and had pure red fruit flavours However, being the first crop, the wine didn’t have great depth or complexity.  Across the road from the winery, after four years of farming organically, followed by three years biodynamically, the estate’s small “Vigna Jules” vineyard of 90 year old Nerello Mascalese vines was at last showing a sense of balance and energy.

In 2018, harvest took place earlier than the year before, due to the warmer dryer conditions. The grapes were trodden by foot and plunged regularly over the fortnight of maceration. This wine raised in 20hl wooden casks until being bottled in September 2019.

The CR standing for the Contrada name “CRASA” which is the “heart” of the domain.

Fragrant, complex, multi-layered.  Ripe red fruits with floral notes of orange and jasmine.  This wine has a firm acidity and an austere tannin structure.

Grape:Nerello Mascalese
