2016 Etienne Courtois, Cuvée Des Etourneaux


Cuvée des Etourneaux is named for the birds that ate the entire harvest in 2001. The parcel is surrounded by fruit trees, creating a beautiful ecosystem. A blend of Gamay de Chaudenay and Gamay à jus blanc, the vines are grown on a flinty clay terroir, with the least intervention possible; vine treatments are made from nettle, horsetail, flowers of sulphur and minute doses of Bordeaux mixture. Matured 30 months in barrels, no new oak, plus one year in the bottle. Neither fined nor filtered, and without added sulphites. 

Luckily, in 2016 the Starlings had other fruits to eat, and the Gamay was in perfect condition when harvest came around. Plums, cherries, tension and minerality, an Etienne Courtois signature. Great balance, reminiscent of pinot noir.
